A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
