Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
